I don’t know if it’s just engineering, just my friends, or just this year, but recruiters seem to be getting worse. Much worse. It doesn’t help that they can make upwards of $20k a year off one candidate, so why not just throw a bunch of emails at the wall and see what sticks?

I’m a software engineer working in silicon valley. I’ll collect my friends’ and my Recruiting Fail examples here, and see what happens. Feel free to send your own! Without further adieu, here’s: How NOT to find good people.

Edit: If you’ve got your own stories, I’d love to hear them! I’ve run guest stories in the past, and would love to publish yours. Usually all that’s involved is forwarding the email thread, or taking a screenshot. All fail posts have the recruiter’s info anonymized, and I can anonymize yours too, if you like.

    Hi,

    I just found your blog through a friend who is a recruiter. I am currently on the look out for a job and have numerous encounters with recruiters, some of them really, really annoying, that I think I didn’t get the interview because they were representing me.

    Where shall I send stories when I get a good one? I’m sure I’ll have one pretty interesting through this entire job hunting process.

      Sorry to hear you’re having an annoying time trying to find a job. I hope these bad recruiters at least have the decency to be so bad they give you some entertainment value along the way 🙂
